Were you aware of any of the vehicles behind you?
If not then you need to up your awareness especially leading up to traffic calming/narrowings, junctions etc.
If you knew the van was also behind you have two options:
Hug the kerb and let it pass.
Pull out (carefully) into the middle so as you're passing through pinch points so it's clear to all: this is NOT the place you're going to be overtaken.
I wouldn't suggest belligerently sitting in the middle of the road indefinitely as some here advise- I personally think it's provocative. Once you're through the narrowings there's nothing wrong with moving to the left to let faster moving vehicles overtake but do the whole thing again well in advance of narrowings/junctions.
