Just unlocked and rooted my Nexus 5 using the Nexus Root Toolkit. Pretty easy but had the usual issues installing the drivers (possibly as Windows 8 doesn't like unsigned drivers) but the instructions lead you through it pretty well.
One thing to note though, the recommended backup settings don't back up system settings, launcher layout, stock app settings, etc which is a bit unfortunate if you've spent some time making the phone work how you want it.
