OK twats, it's time to take your lights out with you when you ride your bike! The nights are drawing in, but tons of riders seem to think they're visible after 8. You're not.
i just received a £50 fine for not having any lights.
almost made it aswell,,,,,,,,,, 2 streets from home.
the charging officer said that it was because they had orders from high up to cut the number of road deaths.

The Mayor of London will be asked tomorrow if police could waive fines awarded to cyclists for riding without lights - provided they buy a set within seven days.
As it stands, cyclists in London risk a £50 fine if they are caught after dark without a white front light and a red back light, but during a trial in Cambridge, 85 per cent of riders chose to avoid the charge by making themselves more visible.
Tory assembly member Andrew Boff will ask Boris Johnson during Mayor’s Question Time (MQT) tomorrow whether a similar trial might work in London, following a spate of deaths on the capital’s streets that have lumped pressure on Mr Johnson to do more to improve safety.
Mr Boff, who is a cyclist himself, said the measure should be considered alongside a raft of others aimed to saving the lives of cyclists, adding: “What this is designed to do is to get people thinking about the own safety…
“There have been times when I was not as visible as I could have been.
“I think it’s something that people in London will appreciate.”
He said cyclists should be “reminded” to look after themselves.
“It’s about improving the general level of safety of cyclists. Cyclists, I do think, need to from time to time be reminded to take certain steps to ensure they’re visible.”
Mr Boff said he hoped the Mayor would welcome his “very un-bureaucratic” measure during MQT, which begins at 10am tomorrow morning. -

£50 for not having lights or £35 for killing a cyclist. Drivers should be "reminded" to notice whether there is a cyclist on their bonnet.

^^ they did indeed try it in Cambridge last year. I think it's a great idea, far better than a fine.
Better still would be a compulsory £50 cycle training course for RLJing or similar.

Better still might be to not focus their limited time and resource on motorist placating victim blaming antics.

someone on another thread suggested ithis. police issuing fines that can be cancelled at bike shops when you purchase lights.

I guess you're not talking about the lights suggestion. Giving people a constructive way out of avoiding a fine and complying with the (very sensible) law seems a fairly sound idea. Good way of keeping bike shops in business too.

sickening. and just 3 points on the license for hitting a cyclist then 90 metres later a tree, with a road sign in between.fair play the guy has voluntarily stopped driving but he can change his mind on that because he was not handed a ban.

Do most buy bicycle specific lights or attach torches/similar?
I've seen some cyclist with super bright lights. Thinking just to buy a high powered led torch and strap it onto the front handles?

Bike specific lights, they come with appropriate fastenings.
Or perhaps you could use a candle lantern instead.

Has anybody tried these direction indicator lights?
http://gadgets.guardianoffers.co.uk/p-982-Indic8or-LED-Bicycle-Safety-Lights.htmlThey apparently flash when you stick your arm out and stop when you hold the handlebars.
I might get some - they could be useful on my Vespa (which doesn't have indicators) as well as my bicycles. -

Do you have issues trying to change position previously?
-
• #719
Is the arm raising not enough?
-
• #720
Not at night it isn't.
-
• #721
Really? Who are you trying to indicate to? Anyone that you're indicating to can surely see you and your arms with those big ol' car lights pointing at you.

Sorry I mentioned something that might make a positive contribution to road safety.
Fuck.Stupid things in your wheels are perfectly reasonable though, eh?

No need to apologise, they just seem superfluous to me, you did post them up asking if anyone had tried them, and although I haven't it seemed like you wanted opinions.

Some think holding their arms up/out to be some kind magical command that everybody must heed and just maneuver. Unless you know it's clear there no sub for looking back first and being certain that it safe to go.*
- sorry if it comes across as patronising/teaching you to suck eggs. It's just as much for those inexperienced riders looking for tips.
