  • Getting all art attack on it. Nice

  • For hills 3 speeds won't cut it no, that's a good plan :)

Le Manfriend has a 5 speed SA hub and it's geared very low, as he needs to climb Col Du Cavehill on the way home.

  • There are some beauty's of climbs in Edimburgh so I think it's best to be prepared! Ahh that infamous hill ;). Today's task is to refit the internally routed cables.. Oh the joys!

  • Well I have ran head first into my first metaphorical wall.. The Peugeot has a Swiss threaded bottom bracket, and as it will be sitting in Edinburgh unridden, in the elements and easy to steal for the majority of the year I don't think I'll bother with a Phil Wood Swiss bb... This will be the first build that I have to give in and rebuild an unsealed bottom bracket! Boo!

  • Swiss threaded? That's quite unusual.

There's no history with this frame at all?

  • As in I don't know it's history? Not really, it was my brother in laws uncles commuter many moons ago..

This fellows restoration shows the bike in much greater detail!

  • That's quite nice actually. Old Pugs aren't worth much/can be heavy but seem comfy.

I've a 13.8 KG tourer with dynohub etc so I have to say a few grams here and there...

(though I did go weight weenie on the Ciocc. Ho-hum)

  • It's a pretty thing to look at, but I wish I had scales to weigh it. I would estimate 2.5 or 3 times the weight of my 531c frame at least. Hopefully this means it will stand up to Edinburgh's cobbled streets and harsh winter.. I've also opted for a 28c rear tyre but might move even fatter if I find it too thin/uncomfy. I've never really ridden anything other than 23's so I look forward to the change!

Got the new bearings for the bottom bracket today and a new tub of grease! Now to conquer my life long fear of rebuilding an unsealed bb!

  • Is it like an old Campagnolo one with caged bearings? Rebuild in a carton box job the ballbearing want to go everywhere...bar in the cage :P

  • It is indeed, two cups (one with a shoulder to bear on the BB shell, one adjustable), a lock ring and a load of balls, most of which now live under my fridge. I decided to go for new bearings as the old cages were a bit rusty and loose!

Other than that there was no real dramas in the build! So here she is!

  • Good show! :)

  • My vintage beastie. The BB has a tendency to become unstuck, time for some locktite...

  • B-e-a-utiful! Much more time and care spent on that than this wagon I can assure you! Check out the cables though!

  • Woohoo, frame routing! :)

Well in Edinburgh you don't want anything too precious I'd say. Unless you want to bring two d-locks everywhere ;)

Vintage brake blocks are so-so ok in dry but in wet on a hill...

  • I know, unfortunately it has quick release front and rear wheels.. So I will require double locks!

Ahh yes.. The brakes sort of feel as if there was an elastic band used instead of a steel cable. To say they're spongey is a huge understatement.

  • Salmon coolstop are your friend. I slapped some on the Canti braked tourer and makes a different in the wet.

Edinburgh, hills, wet, trams... If no joy a set of use Tektro brakes may be what the doctor ordered.

  • Pffft, thats all getting too cautious for my liking.

Old blocks, original brakes and cheap cables FTW! You just need to time the trams and traffic well.. hahaha.

  • Living dangerously, the cyclist way...

...cycle hard, die young, leave a pretty flat corpse :P

  • .

  • Welcome! :)

I think there's a Critical Mass too last Friday of the month, best to check FB if it's still on.

Fred Festival has a Belfast chapter, they may have some events on too. Due to work etc. I miss most of the action, so over to others for shenanigans.

  • Welcome
