  • Winter bike yunomudguard?

  • Wish I had that frame as my bestbike, let alone winterbike

  • Hi, this is my last build, a light touring bike (or randonneuse légère). Frame was custom made for the previous owner by daniel salmon (famous for his mudguards).

  • ^Nice!

  • Seattube/mudguard porn!

  • Classy. I bet there's cognac in one of those bidons.

  • The more I look at it, the more I like. Such lovely details, everything looks just right. One day my Hetchins will be built similar, but with earlier parts....

  • That is porn indeed. Would only switch the bidons so the black one is at the back.

  • Winter bike yunomudguard?

played with some crud roadracers but clearance was super tight - esp on the rear and i ran out of patience getting them to sit just right.

  • salmon's excellent, but I have to question the use of those tyres for touring!

  • I would question the width/usefulness of those fenders, but yeah, really smart look to the project.

  • salmon's excellent for appearance

    ftfy.

They're pretty heavy and barely cover side spray.

  • salmon's excellent, but I have to question the use of those tyres for touring!

    Who's touring?

The bar bag might just be full of camembert de Normandie (to soak up the cognac).

    #racist

  • Aha yeah that's a bit racist but not far from the truth :-)
Salmon mudguard are not the best for heavy rain conditions but they cover the entire width of the tyres, which are 25, and are custom made to fit the frame. But yeah, a pair of berthoud or bluemels would have been more appropriate i guess.
    Anyway, thanks for the comments!

  • Turned this:

    Into this:

  • I can't tell if I liked it more before or not. What was wrong with it/ reason for conversion anyway?

I like the bars and fender, but the position of it is shocking. Also that lever reach seems impratical and hard to use.

Are those tyres tan or white wall?

  • you have mudguard mounts, why not get full mudguards?

  • This is a conversion I made for a friend.

The original bike had tubulars on so they had to go. He wanted a relaxed pub ride.

The brake levers are Bromptons and the reach is ok, the tyres are gumwall.

  • Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a screw-on wheelset than the singlespeed one?

  • That black wheelset is a loan until I can find a cheap all silver wheelset.

I could fit a screw-on type wheelset but the chainline will be off.

A friend is supposed to give me an early Shimano 105 wheelset so I will use that and singlespeed kit I already purchased.

Mudguard wise, I have chucked so many steel sets in the bin over the years, I guess I should have kept one!

That bamboo mudguard looks great anyway

I mean to simply take off the freewheel from the tubular wheel to the new one without having to removed the entire drivetrain in the first place.

    That sounds far too easy.

Joke aside, the tyres were tubulars with no puncture proctection so that would last for about 1 Monday morning ride

  • I think what Ed is saying is that your friend should have asked you to keep the gears.

That way instead of having a comfortable low maintenance single speed for pootling around town, he would have an old road bike with crappy old band-on friction shifters that he'd just leave in the same gear anyway.

I would put some proper 'gaurds on as that won't do a great deal and there seems to be plenty of space for them.

In terms of a wheelset how cheap do you need?

    KinLin ADHN = £30
    On-One/similar Track hubs = c.£60
    ACI Spokes from cyclebasket = c. £20

Just over £100 for a decent wheelset.

I see - so just turn it into a ghetto singlespeed.

I was after a cheap second hand wheelset so £50 max to keep budget low.

Plenty of options sub £100 but don't want to spend that much.

    That is a sunshade.
