They knew it was really old, so killed it to find out how old. And all the time they could have just counted the rings on the outside, but that was trickier. So they just killed it.
People suck.
The specimen was collected among other specimens in bulk, which are then frozen on / near site, to preserve them.
It was only when they brought it out to examine, some 5 months later, that they realised how old it was.
