They're really bad, that why I don't recommend them, even for children.
I've serviced one a while ago, and was appalled by the components; the single pivot brakeset is hard to operated even when I redo the housing and insert a new cable, the reach is very long for the suggested person height, the lever reach is too long to be operated by a child's hand, it's heavy (close to 11kg on the scale), etc.
I have advised the father that it would be best to put a flat bar and brake levers on it as it'll be far more comfortable for the child, luckily an inexpensive option as the bar mounted levers can be mounted on a flat bar.
You'd need to spend at least £500+ for a decent child/small road bike, much as you would a 700c road bike.
