Why would you want to fuck with that bike? It looks great as it is. Putting a fork with a longer blade will not only (probably) destroy the handling, but it will ruin the aesthetics.
What about getting a Wald basket? You'd probably need to change bars to fit them, but it won't be as detrimental as fucking with the whole geometry of the bike.
If that isn't an option and you have a bit of cash. Look for Nitto's luggage solutions. These usually fit on bikes that aren't originally intended for panniers.
