For me I feel like the first is a stronger photo, everything leads the eye to the horse (and as a bonus it's looking back along that at the camera) and the extra height and shape of the arch takes away from that in the other one. Maybe also because the opening in the first looks pretty much 3:2 same as the whole picture.
ps i hate horses :c
