Less likely to get caught on a branch and undo as well...

Front: facing backwards, Campag wings style. Rear: facing forwards, parallel to the chainstays. Old school aesthetics!

-17* 180mm stem and that'd be alright.

I'm sure it rides nicely but it's not much to look at.

Yes

Why were they not so popular when branded as edge composites?
It seems that their rebranding suddenly made their components much better in the eyes of cyclists. Or was there a quantum leap in quality when the logo changed?

I think that they were equally popular but simply didn't have as great a distribution network as they now enjoy.
I've got one on my will-it-never-be-ready bike because it met the requirements (almost), I'd have happily taken a cheaper alternative if one had existed though - I do feel that I paid some hipster tax.

There was definitely a point when they became fashionable, in that John Prolly way, like Chris King and Thomson.
What's bothering me with that black bike is that the fork crown is nearly as high as the seatpost clamp.

I think this is the major part. I remember reading lots of recommendations for the Edge forks and wheels on WW a while back. When I had a search at the time you only seemed to be able to buy them from the US website.
Also (and I may be wrong here) I thought it was their wheels, especially their carbon clinchers that made the brand so popular. The fact that they made one of the lightest forks (and an uber light version of that) which you could match to your bling rims then made them a popular WW choice.

^Ok, so I know what that is, I can calculate the enormous cost, I could ignore the mismatched components, but does that make it pretty?

That peg is a mess. An expensive mess.

always non-drive side and backward gets my vote. Always easy to get them open in a hurry and aero too ;)
