  • Because you can't fit wide tyres in a Pomp, it will look like a 27" bike with 700C wheels

  • 38mm/1.5" is about the limit with 700C, and the inside faces of the chainstays are more or less parallel over the stretch from where the bulge of a 700C would be to where it would be on a 26" rim, so you're not going to fit much bigger tyres by shrinking the rims.

    Compared with 700×38C, that drops the BB by about 15mm and reduces the trail by a couple of mm, all well within the range of geometries people actually intended their bikes to have.

    It's also about as fat as will fit in a Pompetamine. If you want wider tyres, you need an MTB frame.

  • Hi. I'm starting to spec out a pompino build as a kind of do-everything commuter bike. This forum is full of useful stuff.
    I'm looking for advice on frame size. I'm 6' with a 34" inseam and a slightly longer than usual reach for my height. Will the xl be too big? I'm planning on fitting drops rather than straight bars.

  • I ride XL. Not far off your size. Little taller. I'd go XL.

  • I'm just shy of 6ft with similar inseam and have the large size which I built up with drops. Not sure what my reach is like compared to others but it fits perfectly. I absolutely love the frame and it is the best bike I've every riden.

    You must be more flexible than I though skinny, I couldn't manage that saddle to bar drop.

  • By the sound of things I'll be ok with either l or xl. But stock of the xl fits with my blue/silver/tan planned colour scheme. .... Although skinny's pic above has got me rethinking white/black.

    There's been a lot of fork talk in recent posts. I'm on fairly tight budget, Are the standard forks any good or is it worth forking out more for some used carbon cx forks?

  • I've got the blue myself an excellent choice.

  • Forgot to add the standard forks are fine. I think I benefit from carbon forks on an alloy frame but not sure with steel. I had just a small amount of toe overlap with my 165 mm cranks so the rake was good. Not so good when I put on mudguards, but I only notice it every now and again.

    Forks are Leopard CX-1. Wheels are Vision TC24 carbon. They are very light at around 1200 g. They are not cx specific but as the rims are 23 mm wide they are perfect match with Limus tubs.

    As for carbon forks on steel frame, nothing makes more sense in my head than this. It is often an more expensive solution than steel forks, but it is the the easiest way to make your ride lighter. And for cx it is very nice with a light setup as you will be carriying your bike uphill alot. For daily commuting or flat road racing steel forks are great.
    Pomps are heavy, but for the price this is the best bike I have ever had. So much fun!

  • I'm thinking of getting Kinesis Pure CX forks like JaniS' from the last page, or something cheaper. I guess with 28c and mudguards (for fixed commute). No Idea about rims, cxp22?
