The opinion was that the patella was being dragged out of position by a lump in the muscle in the upper leg, which was caused by compensating for a calf injury in the other leg, which was caused by compensating for the back injury that's been bothering me for a few years.
Aim for the winter is to get the back sorted and hopefully everything else will sort itself out.
