Police spotting (junction watch)

Does anyone know the deal with ID? Do you have to give them it if they ask for it? Does stopping you give them a right to go through your pockets if you don't have any? I'm pretty sure I don't legally have to carry ID?

It was the bike police that saw me. FPN for 'Contravening Traffic Signs'.

If you've committed an offence, they can require you to prove who you are - so you don't just give them a made up name and address - or face the prospect of being nicked under PACE so they can ascertain your identity. That's my understanding anyway.
