"Oh Shit" moments...

  • So on Tuesday i had a check up for my collar bone after my accident a few weeks ago. The Dr said all was cool, just not to crash my bike again.

Wednesday morning i'm cycling to work. I remember approaching the roundabout that i navigate everyday. Next thing i know i'm being put on to a spinal board, with paramedics asking if i know what day it is. I don't.

Thankfully nothing big is broken, but i lost a few teeth, and cut my face up so i'm pretty swollen up. Still no idea what happened and i'm yet to hear from the popo.

    Fuck this shit.

    But how's the collarbone?

  • wow jaysus! heal up soon
I'd rather break a bone than lose teeth! :(

  • Shit! :-(

  • Had a pretty great/terrifying oh shit! moment a few weeks back. Doing laps of Regents Park, getting used to my geared bike and spending time in the drops. A little bit clogged up going through a traffic light after the mosque and I'm a touch too hard on the right hand brake - WHOOSH up goes my rear wheel at least level with my head and OH SHIT! so I panic feather my brakes again (instead of just using the left hand brake) and WHOOSH my rear wheel stay up in the air even longer - and then again! By then other cyclist behind me are audibly whooping and whoa-ing as I'm right behind a moving car and some parked cars and going "Oh fuck!" and I've travelled about 20 feet like this. I managed to keep it all together and eventually my rear wheel finally touches down. I got a 'fair play for keeping it together' but it was terrible riding. I was like this guy but dangerously out of control. Just because someone can ride at 19mph doesn't mean you should jump on their wheel people

BTW The reason I keep saying left and right brake is that in the US (hence the shit username) the front and rear brake are installed to the opposite hands. Every once and a while I get caught out. Fuck you America! What the fuck!

    Thanks all.

Yeah, i would have taken a broken anything over the teeth, the dentist reckons i should be all good in around 3 weeks though. Breaking your leg is a damn sight cheaper though.

  • Ouch, heal up fast James. That sounds horrid. I'm with you on the teeth thing - when I had my accident earlier this year the thing I was most upset about was smashing one of my teeth. To this day I've only shown one person the photo of my mouth before I spent £££ getting it fixed :(

  • I broke a tooth, got it fixed and then knocked that out, I've got used to missing half of it now.

  • Heal up soon, James.

  • Fuuuuuu... Heal up soon.

  • Damn! Heal up dude!

  • reminds me of excitebike on the nes

  • Not really a Oh shit moment but completely stupid.

Yesterday morning I went out for a road ride on the way home when I was in the city centre, there was 3 lanes I was sitting in the middle lane. As I pull up to the lights I unclip on one side as Im pretty dead but am too far froward when I stop and go to unclip my other side as I think im gonna deck it. Although I could get the right side out so there was me lying on my side in the middle of the road after falling over. Total red neck! With some motorists laughing as I pick myself up. that put a slight dampener on my not too bad sunday ride.

  • Had a little oh shit this morning. I was going at a fair speed about to turn left down Penton rise off Pentonville Road and the light went amber, car in front stopped when I expected them to carry on making the turn (my bad) I grabbed all my brakes to try not to hit the back of the car. the result was I did a whip skid on my Brompton. That woke me up.

  • ^ Fixed Star would be happy

  • Thanks all.

yeah but rehab takes ages and you'll be back on the bike with a nice smile much sooner

    heal up soon, sounded grim

  • my friend was driving back from an after party and left his bike in mc donalds inside. next morning he had a quite of an "oh shit" moment..

  • my friend was driving back from an after party and left his bike in mc donalds inside. next morning he had a quite of an "oh shit" moment..

Can someone explain this to me?

  • Driving = cycling in this story, my best guess

  • I set off from the lights delivering massive power and CRACK one foot is all over the place and I'm bobbing up and down like a yoyo, how I managed to keep myself upright I don't know.

Initially I think I've unclipped but once seated again I see my pedal is attached to my shoe still, the crank arm has snapped I slow and pull over the cyclist I had binned at the lights asks me if I'm ok, I'm a little shaken but have to get a cab really... of course the traffic is a fecker so I cycle the final mile one legged.. that was pretty tough.

    phew

  • I know how much that sucks! What cranks were they?

  • My biggest Oh shit moment happened almost a year ago now, but only just thought to put it up.
Don't normally ride brakeless and whilst have ridden fixed quite a bit have never rode without a brake for more than about an hour. My brother built up his old polo bike into a fixie skidder, with no brakes and I thought fuck it. Might as well learn sometime. Only problem was it hadn't ever been ridden much and, unbeknownst to either of us, the cog wasn't seated properly. Anyhow I decide to ride down into town, which is down one very steep and very congested hill (this is bristol, there are a lot of hills). I start riding down and I'm behind a van, which slows down as a bus comes up the other way as it's only just wide enough for them to pass. I skid to slow down too, but thats when the thread strips. My feet are stationary but the wheels keep turning. I'm heading straight into the back of the truck (and that was the real "OH SHIT!" moment). I swerve out onto the other side of the road and see a gap between the truck and the bus of about 2ft and have no choice but to go for it. I have to duck my head under the wing mirror but make it through. I then have a bit of clear road and have enough time to take my foot out and foot jam. But even then I'm slowing down very slowly so I shout to a guy crossing the road and tell him to grab me. He brings me to a stop and I get off pretty shaken up but in no way harmed. Pretty lucky really and needless to say I won't be riding brakeless for a while.

standard issue that came with the condor pista about 6 years ago.. miche something I think

  • Thanks all.

Ow man...no cameras at roundabout I guess? Hope you heal up OK...

(I chipped a tooth due to a fall on a wet manhole cover, new kevlar tires, corner, going to fast...luckily we have accident dentist cover at work else it would've cost me 2K! It was so weird sitting in a rich person's dentist if you normally go NHS...proper money there, you could feel it and I'm sitting there on a median wage feeling both well out of place and well amused)

  • I chipped a front tooth falling off my brompton hammered.. cost about £80 for the fix, wasn't a huge chip though. I was more gutted about losing 1 dromarti glove
