• I got a call from the company director today. He interviewed the driver, whose version of events was at odds with mine.
He then suggested the driver call me and we have a little chat, which I agreed to. The driver called me 20 minutes later, and we did have a chat.
He agreed he would never overtake other cars in that road, he agreed that he wouldn't like to see his 11 year old daughter alongside a 20 ton lorry, and she had done her bikeability 3 weeks ago.
He agreed that beginning his overtake without seeing the riders up ahead was extremely bad judgement
He also said he had no idea what the highway code said about overtaking cyclists. He didn't have a copy to go and read.
He and I ended our chat on good terms, as nothing actually came of the incident, and he has realised the implications of his driving. He was actually quite chastened.
He promised to share his experience with his fellow drivers.
The director then phoned me, and we discussed doing something to promote cycle awareness with his drivers, such as going and talking to them, getting it on their training syllabus and even me spending time in their cabs.
At the outset I am sending him a 3 point note about passing cyclists which he will attach to all his drivers wage slips this Friday.
He will ask two other tipper operators around here to do likewise
We will look at other ways later on as the opportunities arise.
All in all I think this is a bit of a win.
