Can I ask to be referred to a sports injury place? Do such things exist?
Would there be a teaching hospital/University that might be interested in this?
I really don't want to be told to manage the situation by stopping doing what I enjoy- it's not like I want to smoke Meth whilst despoiling virgins.

Yes you can be referred to a specialist sports injury clinic, providing it is part of the NHS. I suggest you research the clinic and the name of the specialist that you want to see and go back to your GP with this information (Your GP will need the name of a doctor, not just the clinic). I suggest too, if your GP is usually reluctant to refer to anywhere other than the local hospital, you supply them with some evidence as to why this specialist can help as opposed to another, so that your GP has no choice. It is your right to be referred.

Cheers Shoosh, I shall have a word with my Physio and see if he can recommend someone good with podiatric (sp?) surgery.
-

It may be that you want someone in London but after a long search and taking soundings from my philosophy and podiatrist I was repeatedly referred to Matthew Solan at the Foot and Anklle Clinic in Guildford. Has been fabulous when the early diagnosis from GPs including one who has a special interest in sports medicine was you are getting old back off take it easy and learn to live with it.

My bike got stolen from work the other day and I'm now too scared to lock up there. Until the impracticalities of this hit me and I start riding again, I'm considering running to and from work. Which would be about 17 miles a day.
Is this likely to break me in any way? I can run in fine but I've never really tried there and back repeatedly. I'm quite slow, so unlikely to tire myself out too much, but I don't want to knacker my knees from excessive pounding.
Anyone do similar?

85 mpw is pretty serious training. Not many people will be able to run that much without getting injured. If you work up to it slowly you can pull it off tho.

I'd be worried that running tired will give you bad form which could lead to injury... But you are pretty young and fit aren't you?
I'd get the train as soon as you feel twinges, but wouldn't be surprised if you manage it fine.

I might give it a go next week. I expect my form is pretty terrible anyway but I've beaten my body into submission. Not sure what it will have to say about this though.
My main concern is staying hydrated throughout the day without needing to pee halfway home (which is always problematic as there isn't anywhere to go).

Will you be carrying stuff with you as well?
At that distance I would use public transport one way and run back in the afternoon
-
• #6136
I will yeah.
Public transport's a bit of a ballache where I live, for work at least (not usually a problem as I cycle). I do have the option of Boris biking half of it, so I might give that a go if there and back is too hard.

If all else fails you could run part way to a convienent public transport device and catch that...
You'll be fine. Just take it easy, slowly build to every day is the winner.

Henley half marathon this morning.
Haven't run more than once a week in a couple of months, had a beetroot shot and have compression socks on though so I should be fine!

Scientific proof that beetroot juice works.
1.38ish, didn't hang around to find out my official time as it was pissing it down, I enjoyed the 3 mile hill at 8 miles immensely as it let me catch and overtake a tonne of people.

Nice work ed, got the confirmation of your time texted to me earlier. Chip time was 1:37:49.
Well done sir. Jealous I had to give up my place, spent the day working my arse of and sending myself crazy in the process. -

Inspired by this I ran to work (and then doubled back to London Bridge to get home again) this evening, took ~1 hour door to door to get to work.

Does anyone have a GPS watch they might lend me for 2 weeks? I've just totalled my Garmin.
-
• #6148
What did you do to it? I'd offer my 910, but I'm afraid I need it at the moment.
ANT+ dongle and a telephone?

I put it on a shelf to find a satellite - then when it did, it vibrated it's way onto the floor and smashed the glass. I need a watch as it's for running.
Garming do a flat-fee replacement service - £75 gets a reconditioned watch, but it takes 2 - 3 weeks.

Their clothes might be nice, but the logo and site doesn't live up to it
Sadly you may be right. The key thing is to find a doctor who does sport themselves. You might get lucky!
