I commute on both hardshell and softshell (my dad gave me his old repaired one as he got a replacement from the driver's insurance).
hardshell I felt were warmer and slightly more waterproof (as today proven so), it felt tougher that's for sure.
softshell is probably the best all round jacket for commuting, especially the zipper on the underside of your armpit that the hardshell don't have, make a big difference in preventing myself from getting boiled alive like I did with the hardshell.
