I used a few very light coats of matte black spray paint and went over the decals. I'm happy with the finish of the paint now that it has dried it's neat and has covered over all the writing - just don't tell Terry.
I think I will be using the paint to fill in stone chips as and when they occur because the original paint job is very prone to chipping. I only dropped a plastic tyre lever on the frame and it went down to the metal.
