I'm not at all sure what happened. The upper jockey wheel has completely disintegrated, and the hanger's bent as is the pivot bolt, so there's obviously been quite a lot of force going through it to badger it so completely. However, it wasn't in the spokes of the rear wheel and was in second from top on the rear cassette, so I really can't work out why it self-destructed.
Still, after having said she was turning back for the hotel, Cycliste had a change of heart and did the remaining 125km with a bodged single speed set up which (admittedly I'm biased) I was rather impressed with.
