Dealing with everything informally means a crash is not reported for statistical purposes, which has implications when trying to design safe streets. It is very easy to underestimate the long-term consequences of any crash.
The police are often dismissive or unhelpful after cyclist/motorist crashes.
I am not suggesting that you should be grasping or greedy. It is your right to be compensated for something that is not your fault. Insurance is there and compulsory for that reason. I am only suggesting you attempt to get that which is rightly yours. Cyclists often get the raw edge of the deal. That is not fair.
