^ This seems to have been missed through most of the discussion? Even if the body can recover from an effort like that in a couple of days, the idea that his mind would be fully in it, especially riding for someone else who hasn't exactly been a great team-mate in the past, and who in all honesty had sweet-FA chance of winning.
And with his stated desire to go back to the track, I'm not really surprised that his heart wasn't in a 170mile slog through the rain. And indeed, perhaps having something approaching a normal life, heaven forbid

i can't imagine what the world would look like having been one minute standing at a pinnacle of achievement that could have barely been imagined, with all the stress, effort and hardship endured to get there surrounding it, then within a year find yourself somehow written off in favour of the guy who for all intents and purposes has been the architect of a lot of stress and intrigue and made very public criticisms of you then be asked to be his bottle carrier.
Wiggo swallowed a lot of pride just to be there and has kept his own council for the most part, if he pulled out its because it was a bit of a fucking bad joke to begin with.
And no offence to Thomas, but why the hell was he road captain? If Cav couldn't keep his powder dry, and if they put all their eggs in the basket of trying to ride on the front for an over-confident Froome and it didn't work, it's kind of bullshit to point at Wiggo trying to preserve himself from skidding out in the rain and popping his collarbone again as a contribution to their failure.

well put!

public criticisms? I'd like to know more, missed that obviously

Enough of this shit, Tyler Farrar has won a mother fucking European race!

• #3908
you're probably right Andy, I'll just look at the riders' actual racing and decide who I like. I liked Wiggo a lot in 2012.

You are mistaken. By dint of them having almost super-human they should also have super-human mental strength, sacrifice everything in search of approval from the Daily Mail regurgitating masses. You win a silver medal in the Worlds just after winning the Tour of Britain but he climbed off in the road race. Coward! Lazy cunt! Where's a bus when you need one? Lets chuck one of Britains greatest ever cyclist under it.
Of course if he had beaten Tony Martin in the ITT and got gold this wouldn't be being discussed. 'World's best TTer tired for road race....after giving everything and beating the worlds best Time triallers Sir Bradley Wiggins, multiple gold medal Olympian and TdF winner, was unable to give much more, after giving Britain so much already. Despite his best efforts, the rest of the British team couldn't match his heroic demolish of the world's best a few days before. The tired GB team, after delivering a second TdF winner in 2 years and being the top ranked trade team, toiled dogmatically but ultimately in vain, after such a long and successful season. A bridge too far? Perhaps, but after so much success, it is churlish indeed to condemn one poor performance in the midst of so much brilliance.'

Totally agree, though personally I would rather have seen some young lions with no hope in hell of winning giving it everything and failing miserably, than the entire GB team bailing for whatever reason. They might have done the smart (the computer says no) kinda thing quitting, but at the time I certainly didn't find it particularly dignified. If you commit to the team, in this case representing team GB competing at the world championships, in my humble opinion you commit to give it one hundred percent or not at all.

3 teams fold and Farrar gets another contract??

He really MUST have pictures of Vaughters hanging out the back of a sheep or something.

Tour of Almaty. I saw it.
Our Sky vs. OGE bet is tied heading into Tour of Beijing. #anticlimax
-
• #3917
How can it be that close? Do you get 5 points for each Orica win whilst your colleague gets 1 point for every Sky win?
-
• #3918
It's a complicated process involving a pre-determined points system. Otherwise it would be stupid comparing a team that are after GC wins versus a one-day/sprint team.

Good to see Purito win, a rider I really like, wish I could be more confident about him though, but then that goes for all of them. A fitting revenge on Valverde to boot.

• #3920
Confidence being a loaded term here.. Stay away from the clinic, Jimmy.
-
• #3921
I love watching Purito attack - one of the few genuinely exciting climbers
-
• #3922
It's less the clinic and more a top Spanish rider riding for Katusha
But he's a top character and sensation to watch, really rides with a combination of his balls and his heart. Brilliantly timed attack and once he was away it was won, as the three chasers either couldn't work together to chase him down or simply didn't want to.

Chris Horner is having an extended rant at the injustices of the world on twitter. Check it out by following @hornerakg
Still the second best TT-er in the world, and maybe a lot closer to the best if his front wheel was on right. Maybe he was pissed off about that? Equally as likely he saw that Froome didn't stand a chance and he took the wise decision to climb off early.
