  • I'd rather drink Woodford Reserve than most blended whiskies. Not in the mood for a complex single malt or single cask whisky every day.

  • Nice bourbon is really good... like with most spirits our first interaction with them is something cheap an nasty. Probably drinking way to much and vomming everywhere, thusly putting you off a spirit for no really good reason

I mentioned I got given a bottle of this back in July; kicks everything you thought you knew about 'good' bourbon into a cocked hat.

What do you recommend I try as my first 'nice bourbon'?

  • Woodford Reserve.

  • Jura prophecy £42 at Sainsbury's
Will crack it open & report back

Definitely not as sweet as their Superstition and not as harsh as I'd expected, given their statement that it was extremely peaty. A decent tipple, although I'm still not really a massive peat fan.

I read something online that they'd added caramel to this for consistency between batches - I can believe it, as there's something I can't quite put my finger on about the colour & flavour.

Is it better than something you can get for £30? Possibly not.

  • Woodford Reserve.

£22 in Asda at the moment

  • No ASDAs near me. Deffo 1st world problem. Cheers for the Noah's Mill recommendation, it's been added to my bourbon hit list.

  • Asda in Brentford ...

  • Mizuwari are doing quite a bit for the London Cocktail week.

Think Im going to go to the Suntoury night

This is tomorrow - should be fun

  • Bottle of Noah's Mill added to my Christmas list, I need to up my old fashioned game. V. jealous of Suntoury night 'Loin, bet that's going to be tasty.

  • The Suntoury tasting was awesome and incredible value.

cost 20 quid each and we drank circa 120quid worth of drinks + food (admittedly it's an expensive place to drink but still!)

I tasted the Hakushu 12yr for the first time and have fallen in love. Ordered a bottle last night. So smooth and really 'green' tasting.

Had a great night but wasn't at my best today!

  • £9 off Superstition in Sainsburys at the mo.

  • Highland Park 12 - what am I missing? Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, yet I had 2 drams last night, the second slowly.....and it was almost unpleasant actually - had a very strange almost bitter feel on the palate - I usually don't mind subtle 'drinkers' (Dalwhinnie 15 springs to mind) but this was very much not to my taste - maybe I've been spoilt recently with Ardbeg Uigeadail - help me out guys, I'm perplexed! I almost want to take it back to shop!

  • Have to say I don't like recent Highland Park bottlings; they've really changed the character of the whisky. I don't think the new peatiness suits it at all.

That said, what I don't like about it might not be what you dislike. For me, the distinctive hint of white spirit (best way I can describe it) was always part of the appeal (can always pick out Highland Park in a blind tasting). Maybe you'd like it with the peat and without the petrol fumes (for me, it's the other way round). Either way, I think that combination makes for the sourness.

Not that I don't like peaty whiskies; it just really doesn't work for HP.

  • sourness, that's it - totally - it tasted sour on my tongue - not nice

  • Discounted tickets to the Whisky Lounge Fest

    Might be interesting.

did anyone go to this? there is one up here on Saturday I might attend

  • Can anyone recommend a bourbon for my girlfriend's birthday? Her favourite at the moment is Woodford Reserve but I'd like to get her something she hasn't tried before!

  • Ideally not super expensive because I've already spent far too much on her other presents! Ha ha.

  • Redbreast is nice.

  • It is but it's not a bourbon

  • It doesn't necessarily have to be a bourbon, she does tend to prefer them though.

  • If it's cheaper stuff you're after then Buffalo trace and Maker's mark are both under £30 a bottle and fairly tasty.

  • did anyone go to this? there is one up here on Saturday I might attend

I went to it.. Whisky tasting is great fun... chat to the reps and you'll get loads of tasty whisky.

oh and probably a bit hammered

  • A bit hammered?
ha! we were all completely bladdered (I think)

  • Next to my desk I have a Hakushu 18yr and an Ardberg Uigedal

    ....must resist and do work...
