Isn't that on Retrobike too? Looks great... in fact, it looks very modern, too.
Anyway.
I discovered that the Dawes Kingpin doesn't use a 28.6mm seatpost, or at least, mine doesn't. It's marginally bigger - perhaps 28.8 or 30.0. New shim time.

For £20 + spokes it might be worth testing out...?

Odd, mos def 28.6 what year is it? -

Just got myself a kingpin and was thinking of building up some wheels with the anklebiter rims, does anyone know what the rear spacing is supposed to be?
-
• #92
I think it's 120mm.

I measured it this evening, and it seems like slightly less, ~117mm (wasn't the most accurate ruler). Any one had any experience getting a 120mm hub in there?

Don't know about the year... I would check the hub but it's in the garage and covered in dirty oil. It's a fairly late model though; the Dawes logo is silver text in a round oval, mid-80s I'd say.
Anyway.
It's probably supposed to be 28.6, but it's either been enlarged by someone forcing or wiggling a seatpost around in it, or it's just not very well built. Or maybe my seatpost/shim combo is smaller than the marked size (27.2 shimmed to 28.6). I couldn't find a 450mm seatpost in 28.6 so had to go for 27.2.
Still haven't done anything with it, other than put a long seatpost on it and ride it. I'm going to start measuring up and designing some drop-bolts for the brakes so I can get the BMX wheelset on.

I'm loving this thread. I too have recently got hold of a BSA 20 and a Raleigh Shopper. The shopper, although untidy, is perfectly ridable and I do ride it much to the amusement of the locals seeing a 6', 50yo bloke riding a girly pink, 70's shopping bike complete with both luggage racks & baskets.
The BSA is so far totaly stripped down ready for a 'Sheldon' make-over. As it is at this moment -
Stripped & painted silver. (will be stripped, re-painted & rebuilt again once finalised).
Head tube cut down to accept a kids MTB front sus fork. As I am going to fit 406 rims this solves a multitude of problems (brakes etc).
Front fork fitted. As it happens, the head tube bearings from the kids bike fit a treat.
I'm not quite sure what action to take with the BB yet as I want to fit the 6 speed rear wheel from the kids MTB.
I am starting a blog Here if anyone is interested.

Hey Guys,
sorry if I'm butting in! I'm new here and just looking for some help, advice and/or direction to the right place for help!
I own a raleigh shopper and have a re-occurring problem with it since owning it and haven't the faintest idea how to fix it. It's probably really obvious and I'm sure you can tell I'm a bike novice! The problem is with the back wheel not holding air. It is constantly going completely flat after riding. I have changed the inner tubes several times and every time the bike rides brilliantly for a short time and then starts to lose air quickly to the point every time the tyres are pumped up they lose air quickly when ridden on. The last time I checked the tubes and for holes I had someone have a look at the wheels and they didn't seem to think there was anything wrong. I was wondering if anyone else owning a Shopper has had this problem, and what I would need to do to fix it. If I was to get a whole new wheel for the bike, would this be worthwhile?
Thanks for your time, I must also say This thread has some amazing bikes, made me realise what I liked about it in the first place!

I'd suggest checking the rim tape - make sure it's not split and that it's covering all the spoke holes/nipples. Either that, or there's something sharp and nasty stuck in the tyre...

Sadly, another unfinished project, sold a few months ago.
If anyone's upgrading a shopper, I have some an alu BMX wheelset I no longer need... PM me.

Finally got round to making the single speed conversion from knackered Sturmy.
Just a small weld repair to the chain guard bracket needed to finish, then got a very patient buyer waiting to test ride it.
The project so far for my Mrs. I've got everything but the decals now, which I'll be ordering from here
