Android phones, apps and tablets

  • Only 3 ways to do it?

  • What I meant was there's no centralised place where you can find the default app for something, clear it and replace it with a different app.

  • You can from the app manager, well clear it at least, then go use the app you want and tell it to remember, easy enough, although there are apps to make it easier still if you want.

  • Any recommendations for Bluetooth headsets? I want one for using my N4 with Cyclestreets navigation, so noise cancelling/isolation is actively discouraged.

I've been using a headset from an old phone, but the cable's a bit too short to run from the jersey pocket, up my back inside the jersey into my ear and it's a bit annoying having to faff around with the cable every time I want to use navigation, so bluetooth seems a sensible way to go.

  • the sony bluetooth ones are good. i have the sbh50 and like it.

  • I got one of these Samsung HS3000 Bluetooth Stereo Headset - Black: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics
Lets you plug in any 3.5mm headphones in.

  • I am looking to replace my old laptop with a tablet. Velocio recommended the nexus 7 above. I have 3 questions:
Will it connect to a printer as I need to print documents for work occasionally?
How can I transfer stuff on the laptop to the tablet? Do tablets have usb ports?
I use Word for work. I assume there are equivalent word processing programmes?

I use the sony sbh20 with my n4 for music and navigation. Pretty cheap, comes with nice earphones and you can connect any headphones to it as well.

Best bits are that it pairs via NFC and comes in garish colours.

  • You might struggle a bit of you need to make stuff on word, there are ways but if you need to do it often then you might be better off keeping the laptop around.

  • Thanks all.
I'm wondering what happening with the handset. It's recently started playing up e.g. go into txt messages and before I can do anything it just jumps back to home screen. That kinda glitchy schyyt. I've got rid of a lot of unused apps so will monitor things.

It doesn't really sound like you want a tablet if that's the kind of thing you're doing, even if only occasionally.

I'd think about another laptop or possibly a chromebook (I'd check whether your printer is compatible first but they're good machines for the price if so).

On a separate topic I had a play with a Galaxy Mega and a Note 3 LTE today. The Note was nice, I can see why they're so popular but the Mega seemed a bit underpowered, seemed to stutter at times.

And a final point, is there any point putting custom firmware (cyanogen I'd guess) on a Galaxy Nexus? Does it offer anything above the standard firmware?

  • My brother in law has a surface RT. You can print by connecting it to a printer (wireless I believe to the router first ) . It has a usb port and word. There's also a keyboard. I'm pretty impressed with it compared to my nexus 7.

  • Ah but it's not android! Doh

I like the idea of NFC pairing and £20 cheaper than the SBH50 above.

Sounds like that's the one for me.

  • Nfc seems to use a lot less battery than bluetooth when connected. Can you confirm that please.

  • ^ NFC is used to establish a Bluetooth connection rather than transfer data, just saves having to dig through the menus to set up a connection

  • Doh lol

  • Don't buy Samsung phones:

    They've started region-locking them.

Could be the start of a slippery slope, but it seems that this only applies to the SIM you use to activate the device initially. You're free to put any SIM in after that.

I'd try a chrome book. Seems like it'll do everything you need. Start quick too, easier to type on.

carphone warehouse did something like this with their 'unlocked' iphone 5's apparently. locked to the first sim/network it was used on and was then no longed unlocked.

Why is that any better? Still means you have to have a foreign SIM.

    Samsung >>>

  • if man say him a ting, den him a ting.

  • Thanks, everybody, for the printing info. Will look into the Chromebook idea for starters.
