  • apollo on old street on his plum, and then a Ron Cooper road bike on top of a car in Crouch End

    o hai!

  • Man some of you guys are heavyweights! You think to yourself you are an ok cyclist and then someone comes along and bursts your fragile self blown bubble.

Be nice to Hippy or he'll ban you.

  • I was properly emasculated!

    sexist.

So there's something so inherently unusual in a woman being able to Do Things On A Bike that you should feel like less of a man because you're not better at it than she is? Do you feel like your manliness is in question every time you see a girl do something better than you can, or does that only apply to manly man things like riding a bike? Like, would you feel more comfortable if she was only good at knitting, for e.g.?

did you guys really just do that?

...and why not? "emasculated" was a very poor choice of word. "Humbled" or "awed" would have been much better. Unless of course he truly did feel like his penis and testicles had been removed.

  • Probably me

Nice to have probably met you.

  • v

    Hairy man;

That's the chap! Hope no offence taken re the hairy lower back comment Jaspergh!

  • Saw someone on a silver surly pacer with red anodised parts on my commute in both directions yesterday (Picadilly in the morning, Hammersmith Rd in the evening). Thought it was a nice commuting bike.

Also bloke on a De Rosa who I chased up Roseberry avenue, who looked on here.

  • Where did you get that picture of me??

  • White beAerospoked Leader milling around the Jolly Butchers last night.
    Too shy for the Easts?

mate...that's taking it very seriously..."emasculated" was chosen for exaggeration and comedic factor...I'm not some wife-beating husband from 1845...(apologies in advance for any husbands from 1845 for generalising your generation)

I thought wife beaters were from the 21st century who drunk Stella?

  • God no, we go back years, very historical past time

  • mate...that's taking it very seriously..."emasculated" was chosen for exaggeration and comedic factor...

It still carries a specific meaning though. It reads as though you weren't merely embarrassed because another cyclist was faster and more skilful than you, you were embarrassed because she was a woman.

  • A man talking about sexism, lol.

Most likely because all things being equal a man should be faster on a bike than a woman. That's not sexist. Thus if a woman is faster than you, not only is she more athletic than you, in relative terms she's much more athletic than you.

    Stop being sexist Ed.

And has bigger balls than you

  • this page is shit.

  • I'm essentially with Apollo on this but being an idiot that can't leave well enough alone...

Humbling or awe inspiring are really no better than emasculating as, although not overtly gender based, they are still pretty patronising. But putting aside the patronising tone it is a story that shows a woman in a positive light. Given that not long ago we were getting posts commenting on female cyclists appearance and not their cycling we are at least moving in the right direction.

Tellingly the only comment on the post from a woman indicated it was unwelcome, so we probably have a bit further to go. On the other hand Bothwell is also Scottish so it was just as likely she was only saying it to start a fight.

  • Back to Spotted:

Spotted Jackal and Biarittz in the pub at lunchtime. They were sat with an incredibly handsome bloke.
