In my opinion mostly all mudguards with the exception of Edscoble's collection make any bike uglier the more you add, some lights and a rack and a pump the less pleasing to my eyes.
but for winter you definitely need them. Saw a guy on a beautiful conversion with a saturated arse and that looks far worse.

Why don't you keep the rear ghetto mudguard and add one of my favourite Ghetto style on the front

I was thinking about half a 2 liter coke bottle zipp tied to the downtube, but I might just get a crud catcher, they're only 8 quid.

Its also not a ghetto rear mudguard, its a fendor-bendor 3, which is way better than those shit arse savers
