I am covering a conference...free job ...would you be tempted just to give them high res jpegs?

No, give them medium to low res jpegs

The thought of having to convert any number of raw is dreading me already...

You need to look at your workflow then.

...document of the event and maybe some pics here and there for the website

Definitely low res jpegs then

and the occasional poster...

This is when you charge them for print res/prepped files.
