Is it time to start calling out bad cyclists?

  • Maybe.

  • People on Boris bikes routinely run into my rear wheel when I am trackstanding at lights- does this happen to people who put their foot down?

Yes but foot down means more stable for impact. Or even the increased ability to look around and preempt the noddy about to hit.

Track standing is for forcing the rider behind you to take the lead in a match sprint. Sir Chris Hoy doesn't trackstand at lights BTW.

Some of the dafter and less observant ones probably think you are still in motion.

  • ^ I think this has a lot to do with it. If you ride fixed and slow to a trackstand, they don't realise you're stopping.

It confuses them even more if you stand up to slow down.

  • Stand up all night to slow down, stand up all night to slow down, stand up all night to slow down, stand up all night to get lucky.

  • It confuses them even more if you stand up to slow down.

And the fact you don't stop pedalling as you approach the light gave them the illusion that you're going to head on.

  • You were being a bit of a superior arse and then you tried to cover it up by saying you were joking.

I like trackstanding, it's fun. It makes waiting at the lights less boring, it's a little competition to have with yourself and a thing to get better at. I do think people who try to trackstand on roadbikes and drift over the line are idiots, though.

To defend Andy (who I don't think I've ever met) I think the humour is more obvious if you've partaken in this track standing debate several times already.

Much like the jokes above which are obvious if you've read the thread by that guy that thought fixed was like not having brake lights, but might be taken seriously by someone who hadn't.

As for pushing people off when trackstanding, I've had two people (both polo players) do it to me. It's practically a greeting.

  • Fair enough, soz andy. You still have a superior arse, though.

It's probably been toned by all that trackstanding you do.

  • I like trackstanding on my MTB and BMX and POLO bikes because it makes me look supermegarad.

  • But not superultramegarad though right? You wouldn't want to over do it.

  • To be fair I should probably stop track standing in order to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies that result from that much awesome being displayed in public.

  • I did notice yesterday that when starting off I put a lot of pressure on the second (left) pedal stroke (as I'm already clipped in), and a rather ominous "crack!" noise was coming from the front end.

Hopefully I've not put sufficient force through the bars to crack the steerer, that truly would be dickish.

A tiny shift inside the headset, the thread moving against the nut, or the steerer angling back slightly under pressure can make a noise that resonates through the frame, sounding more worrying than it really is. I've heard nasty cracks from the front end on hitting potholes and on closer inspection everything was fine.

  • We hear quite a few complaints about the drivers of RMS tipper lorries, but not this one deathwish cyclist - YouTube

  • I think the comments on that youtube clip sum it up nicely.

WTF is wrong with some of these cyclist no correction biker ??? this as to go to silly cyclist :(

  • has anyone really been so far as to even do look more like?

  • People on Boris bikes routinely run into my rear wheel when I am trackstanding at lights- does this happen to people who put their foot down?

Bloke on a Boris bike this morning zipped past me at a red light with about a foot gap. I caught up with him (very, very easily) when it went green, gestured for him to pull his earphones out, then told him what he did was dangerous. At next red light he stopped behind me.

Whether he was just avoiding a row or has totally turned over a new leaf, I don't know. All I know is that if he'd hit me from behind I would have been IMMENSELY DISPLEASED.

not so much the trackstanding bit but boris bike riders running into the back of my bike! Best was, "sorry you stopped at the light", 'um yes it's red' 'well i didnt expect you to stop'...no helping some folks

The idiocy that dribbles out of people sometimes is staggering.

  • One of the comments calls him a "lycra clad loon".

I didn't know they made cargo shorts and baggy hoodies out of lyrcra.

  • Was in an Addison Lee cab today. Got the "All cyclists should pay £1000 road tax", "They should all be in the left hand lane" spiel, and ran a few of the "Nobody pays road tax, it's an emissions tax" and "they need to change lanes, just like cars" counter-arguments, but they ran to naught when he just started laughing and gesturing when cyclists undertook as he was indicating and then turning left, and then running red lights.

Don't you all know that running reds gets you an automatic disco and you count for double points when I overtake you again?

    nerged

  • All the better to be seen.

  • cream bike, city sprint trailer thing on clerkenwell/theobalds going straight over zebra crossings despite the people crossing...lame.

silver bianchi ss with pink bar tape..only front brake and ss? why?

  • I saw that City Spring chap this morning, thought to myself "if you're going to blaze straight through the red light, people crossing etc, probably best not to do it with your employers name written all over your dinky little trailer"

  • I should probably confess to taking out a bus wing mirror with a poster tube this morning before someone else posts it. Oops.

Fortunately the driver took it very well.

  • you should know it's always a mistake to take the tube.
