To be fair the road was unusually slippery, most other times you would have got away with it. Staying behind the group leader is polite, and keeps the group together, but it is more about staying on route. Don't expect me to go and chase anyone down if they've been off the front and blasted past a turn.
Helmets are your choice. I believe, on a personal level, their benefits out weight their drawbacks, but wearing a helmet wouldn't have kept you on your bike, and wouldn't have prevented Ludwig from having to abandon the ride.
