after using external keyboard and mouse for over a year I just did this: http://jasonrobb.com/v2/2008/11/24/macbook-pro-unresponsive-keyboard-trackpad-solution/ and it bloody works. needed more pressure than a bit of paper though.
thought, hmm, maybe the screen connection just needs a wiggle too? http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing+MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Core+2+Duo+Models+A1226+and+A1260+Display+Data+Cable/1312/1
maybe I do just need to bit the bullet and buy some tools and learn how to take the thing apart, give it a clean etc. It's not making the hideous buzzing today, back to normal fan noises.
