Locks that work

Anyone heard any reviews about the Knog strongman steel U-Lock?

Knog is all about style and never substance. Get a lock made by anybody else. I'd rather buy a lock made by Cadburys than by Knog.

A lock made by Cadburys would work quite well. The bike thief discovers it's made of chocolate, assumes he's being filmed for youtube and does a runner.

Been reading this thread with considerable interest, as I just bought a new ride and am keen to have it remain mine, as far as I can. Thought the following info could be helpful to anyone trying to make up their mind....

In case anyone doubted the placement of the Abus Granit X-plus 54 among the heavyweights and thicker diameters here, this makes for interesting watching. Somewhat bizarre use of Lemon Jelly for the soundtrack though...

nope I don't work for Abus/Hawley etc, though I will disclose having just bought an X+54, so was keen to find some quantified credentials. Took a fair bit of trawling! Of course Mr Angle Grinder can still turn up and crash the party. But then he can crash any party he pleases.

I guess I should add that they don't specify the model in the video... it looks very much as if it's the X+54 though...

What do people think about this? Overkill or what?

FAHG mini is great but consider using a good chain as your other lock; make them work harder by requiring more tools.

That said, I have an Almax Immobiliser as one of my secondary locks; not everybody is prepared to carry that kind of weight around.

I've always used a mini and evo .... can't be bothered carrying a ton weight. That said my bike is worth only 250, so who cares

Either lock is good. The very important thing is to make sure that there is a very tight fit, so no-gooders cannot get jacks and things into the empty spaces within the lock shackle.

I absolutely would NOT trust the Knog Strongman at all. No way on earth. Never as main lock, and I wouldn't even consider it as a secondary lock, as for the price, others are as good, if not actually much better.

I credit the design, in that as a secondary lock it does take quite a while to remove, but for me, secondary locks should not be bulky - a main lock is already that.

There's a considerable price difference between them so I assumed the granite would offer greater protection. But happy to go with the cheaper one if that is not the case. Is my assumption correct?

The Magnum OnGuard Brute is fine. Keep it lubricated with lithuim grease and its a winner.
DO make sure that the gaps are filled.

One query I had was about the Krabus Xl 505. You mention an edscoble method of putting it around the down tube. I thought the edscoble method was D lock around cranks to stop theft of the cranks? By the looks of it the Krabus is too small for this?

I have UTFS but may just be being dim.

That edscoble, he is a cunning monkey. His post was all the way back on page 22 though, so not so easily found.

its in swedish but you dont need to really understand to watch the vid and you can translate the page on chrome

Very good video, but also a great instruction tool for thieves that don't know whats most effective against different locks. So thieves that read your post will certainly benefit.

That said, I don't think anybody would be surprised that one of the locks recommended here won the test.

Could someone please explain the choice of locking skewers?

The Pinhead has been repeatedly put down in reviews and on forums as too easy to overcome.

The Pitlock system isn't mentioned, but from what I've read needs some pretty big tools to bust, and can also secure brake components.
