Leaking around the edge of the portafilter? That sounds wrong. Maybe you need to replace the gasket…
Crema’s not a problem here. It’s dependent on a few things (type of bean, temp of shot, firmness of tamp - these can all alter the type/depth of crema), but I’m not particularly bothered about creating crema for the sake of it. It’s pretty and everything, but only a side effect.
