  • Not sure if I can be bothered to do the TT tonight. Weather seems nice but legs are achy from a week of silly commutes. I might do it just so see if a different saddle would make a difference as I didn't have time to test it on the weekend.

  • I've only ever ridden 50:12 on the downhill part - It gets a bit spinny. If I get my arse in gear and fix my cranks, I'll do it on 53:12 next week.

If only ever ridden 48 x 15 on the downhill part. what do i win?

  • a 52 chainring
    or a 14 cog

    your choice

  • 48x14 should be within reach for you laner.

Do you have other chainrings you can use?

  • i do now, 51x14 for track. unfortunately Herne Hill league is the same night as my local TT so haven't been out this year.

  • Tester, can't find one of them.
These okay? Found a near new one for £30. Sadly 55T, but that should be enough.

Is that the gearing you're running at HH? 98? Mad.

  • Ha! I know it's too high, but haven't bought new 15t cogs to go on my wheels yet.
Made the standing start for the team sprint fun....

  • For outdoor bunch races I only used to use 49x14 - 92gi which seemed to be the same across the board.

Team sprint it depended where in the order I was. 90gi 1st man, 94gi 2nd and 96gi for 3rd. Obviously it depends on the rider but...

  • I was first man :)

  • There's a 56t stronglight zicral chainring available on xxcycle, don't know how aero the shape is though

Yes, that should work, but I think Bike24 have the Stronglight in 55t, if so I'd pay the extra for new, but only because I'm a tart.

  • And I'm poor, relative. Being a tart isn't an option.
Save some here, spend some there.

  • So my train is just setting off, looks like I'm not making h10/10 again this week..

    Turbo session it is then!

  • I'm going to the pub. Fuel of champions.

  • Hmmm, timekeeper gave me a PB but my computer and Strava both disagreed and by about a whole minute. Unfortunately it didn't really sink in until I'd left and couldn't check - I don't understand how the times are calculated in any case on the result sheet.

    Balls.

  • If the riders start at 1 minute intervals;
your time = (time you finished on the time keepers watch) - (your number)

    If the riders start at 2 minute intervals;
your time = (time you finished on the time keepers watch) - (your number x 2)

    etc

  • but congrats for the probable PB!

  • Hmmm, timekeeper gave me a PB but my computer and Strava both disagreed and by about a whole minute.

Those arithmetic errors often get corrected in the official results, firstly because they recalculate from the raw data and secondly because they verify that the finish order and the recorded times are consistent.

Thanks. The above would confirm the timekeepers time, but it's way off (faster) than what I was reading on my computer as I was approaching the finish and both Strava segments are in line with the computer.

Oh well. I'm still ridiculously slow, so when I can figure out why that is, maybe I can set a new and real PB.

  • i'm not sure, i'm not a time keeper but there are usually multiple watches (although not always at club events where things are less formal) so that is probably what the second number is. I'm surprised they were a minute out however as they should have been synced at the start.

  • are there any good guides around for building a TT bike on the cheap? I already have some bits kicking about and I don't need to buy wheels, so I'm considering cobbling something together slowly over the winter.
What is the deal with frame sizing - go a bit smaller/shorter than you would for road so you get the right elbow bend and a low position?

  • Am I going out too soft? - http://app.strava.com/activities/71495831
It doesn't make sense to me that I'd be able to finish a 23:45 going uphill at 26mph+. It could be the method that other regular riders of that course have but I've previously had a 2min man catch me on the 6th mile only for me to pull away from him for 15seconds. I've also had people say that they've been catching me to the turn then can't make any ground on me afterwards.

This has happened to me. I noted both times and then made sure I went on to beat the faster one so I had a proper PB :)

I believe Jeff Jones wrote an article about it.

You generally go shorter. I ride a 56cm road bike and bought a Med Stealth which I think is something like a 54 top tube.

    53cm actually
