That was for a race btw. For a 100 mile 'ride' I'd not be using gels at all, I'd probably not eat as many bars. I would have a bigger breakfast and just drink the two bottles. I'd probably also stop in the latter stages and refill a bottle with Lucozade.

That makes me feel a bit silly.
Symptom of a crazy early morning start?
My brain tends to go out the window if I'm up before 5am.

Sandwich bag in jersey pocket
Too heavy.

Early morning starts - same deal - if there's 3hrs before start then normal brekkie, if not then a energy bar(s).

On Dunwich I had my Garmin alarm set for every 30 minutes and always ate something whether hungry or not because you aren't eating for 'now' you're eating for 3 hours ahead.

For standard Sunday 4/5 hour rides I'll have a croissant and a coffee before setting off and be fine, for the Ride 100 I was trying quite hard and cleraly burnt my way through all available stored energy way before I assumed I would, due to being a thicko.
Hey ho, you live and learn.

I slightly overpacked on food and at the end still had half a bag of jellybabies, half a pack of fig rolls, a cliff bar and that emergency gel.
generally there seemed to be a lot of excessive hydration resulting in people pissing like horses. -

ive eaten three flapjacks just reading this thread.
Threw the wrappers on the floor.

I didn't even do the ride, yet my jellybaby consumption has rocketed.

green ones are the best.

I like them all. #notjellybabyracist

Having spent many hours at UCH getting kidney stones smashed by ultrasound, I now glug water for England.
Am also told jellybabies prevent stones ;)

I carried around without eating: a pack of jelly babies, a pack of star mix, 2 extra energy gels, more flapjack than I could eat, and an extra salami and cheese roll.
Wasn't even that hungry when I finished. Obviously having too much of a good time and not treating it enough like a race.

an extra salami and cheese roll.
when were you planning on eating that?!
-
• #716
With a cider at a pub stop, I'd have hoped ;)
-
• #717
And if it's extra, how many did you get through on the ride?

Have some rep. Fucking 'ell I need to get back to proper rides.

Coffee, croissant, full Rapha, I know your sort.

I had brought along 2 and ate one at the 45 mile stop.
I'm clearly more suited for audaxing than racing.

Unacceptable, go and give your medal back to Boris.

Gels and littering
these cost £4 - load them up with gels before the ride [ they take about 5 gels worth]
you don't have to consume a whole gel in one go, you can ingest smaller amounts. No empty wrappers, no sticky pockets - nice clean countryside and they're reusable

That remind me of the gel I was given that come in a toothpaste container, so much easier to just take a bit and close the lit, especially when empty.
Doubt it's better for the environment with the excessive plastic thought.

Thanks for reminding me I have a load of High 5 gel flasks in a cupboard that would have been the very ticket for Dunwich.
You can also home brew gel that will keep in the fridge for ever.
Agree no right solution, my Bike14 was set at 50/18 which was perfect for everything except Leith where I was swinging too much and struggled to avoid the geared bikes when the lane narrowed.
