• was only space on the bike for my bottle mount and i'd rather carry the weight and have tools/jacket etc if i need them than be a few lbs lighter and get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

the main reason i didn't enjoy some of the up bits was because i was on 48x17 due to tight clearances on the fuji and not having enough chain to fit my usual 48x19.

and asides from going a bit slower than some of the skinny youngun's on the inclines there wasn't anywhere that i struggled on the route. it was just a bit knackering grinding away on the upward bits and the rolling nature of the middle bit of the route meant there wasn't always time to recover before you hit the next 'up' bit. to say it is pancake flat is bollocks as the middle section of the ride is pretty much all going upwards albeit gradually until you hit the big downhill section and it's flat all the way into cambridge.

i also spent a lot of the ride chasing up the front of the pack to tell them they were about to go the wrong way as the people riding off the front weren't always the people who knew where we were going and i had the only working turn by turn gps of the route.

but i'm happy for the willy waving (hilly waving?) to continue. i need to htfu, wear more lycra, ride more hills, get more gears, eat more energy gels and shave my legs.

  • stonehedge pls

  • Its still a flat route though. Just saying.

  • No ride. No talk.

  • Was a good day out guys! On the way home after the ride my rear tyre popped from some pothole action... Too bad no tyre popping skiddZ. Epic autumn slide should be organised.

  • Hope you enjoyed the route.

  • I did very much, thank you Dimi.

  • first draft... zig zags abit at the start to round up some nice climbs and countryside, i've tried to use what tenners has said is the best route for the last bit into town.
First "peak" at around 15 miles is aston hill (that might mean something to anyone who mountain bikes on here) and the second one at around 30 is Ivinghoe beacon. Finishing in Hyde park for waffles and ice cream. I'll try and do a test run within the next few weeks to see if the route is suitable. Is 71 miles too long? the last 10 miles or so is a downhill run into town.

  • Looks good, not too sure my knees will take the hills at the start but we'll see/

I like how the route pretty much goes past my house.

  • Looks fun cough
I like how it ends up in London again!

That looks really cool mate. I don't really know that area well so would we well up for this. :)

  • Looks like a really nice route. I think my route to Birmingham goes up and over Ivinghoe.

  • The first 40 or so miles is places my regular rides cover. After ivinghoe the route goes through ashridge estate (quiet roads, huge manor house, wild deer roaming the estate etc, very nice).

I really have no idea about the second half of the route so need to have a practice go at it but from looking at street view etc it seems to be doable.

After I've had a go at it, possibly this weekend, ill start a new thread to see who's up for it.

  • Hey mate, it looks good and I'd quite like to try it out too.

May head out there one sunday near the end of summer if you're free.

I ride 48/17 and rich rides 49/17 round these routes all the time, the climbs are fine if you keep the momentum up but there is the option to swap to mellower climbs on the day if people are struggling. Kingy has dragged that disc wheel up Aston hill before so you should be fine.

Not a very hhsb thing to say but if anyone isn't very confident descending it might be worth putting a brake on if this route happens, I've tried to plan a route where the decents have plenty of run out but I don't want to be responsible for people coming off.

  • ^^Cool, ill drop you a pm later in the week once I know when I'm about one weekend.

I might be able to gear up to 49/18 but anything bigger kills :/

Ah well I'll just spin like a maniac.

  • I kinda tweaked the route to get us off the A5 and on quieter, nicer roads. The run from The Common to Belmont circle is my favourite road to ride in London. Nice smoothish roads and a steady downhill... sweet.

  • so up for that, someone organise it

  • Rep'd tenners for sorting out the second half of the route.

New thread will be started within the next few weeks.

  • call it what you want but you're not allowed to call it a HHSB ride if we are purposefully attacking hills.

that's not the purpose of HHSB rides.

6 pub stops and lots of skids is.
