Not really meaning to sound facetious (and realise that it doesn't help you in this predicament), but don't use iTunes. Sadly DRM seems to be used to lock users into a single eco-system, as opposed to actually guaranteeing 'fair usage' which one would assume would include playing a file you own on another device you own.
One low-tech solution which I've used in the past is to burn it onto a CD and then re-encode it in a different format. Klunky, but it works. Otherwise there are lots of converters online, no idea what works though
