Small hands? Try out some 6700 shifters - they may be uncomfortably large.
If your Rival is feeling vague give it a good clean and change the cables.
Shimano have pretty much said publicly that 5700 / 6700 and 7900 were sub-par.
I'd go with Force if I wanted an upgrade.
