It was 2 or 3 years ago I sold my turbo trainer to hippy. He came in, all out of breath from the 4 steps up to the front door, sweating like a pig, his grotesque belly spilling out over his 'fashion slacks'. Said he wanted to get in to this cycling lark. I was happy to take his money.
After he left I noticed a pie I had left out on the window sill to cool down had disappeared and there were some odd, and as it turned out, impossible to remove, stains where he had sat on the settee. I wasn't expecting to hear of him again, not unless I started tuning in to Crimewatch every month.
So I say well done Hippy.Someone rep will please. I seem to have shot my load on him already.

You look surprisingly well, all things considered. Did you manage to walk to the podium? I seem to remember that Wilko was a bit shakey when we saw him a couple of years ago.
It's a pity this event clashed with the Tour finish - there was no room anywhere in the media for anything cycling except the TdF. I'm inclined to think that it might be possible now (cycling being the flavour of the moment) to get the papers interested in the 24, but it would have to be on a different weekend when it could have a clear run.
I finished, was a bit shaky getting off the bike so sat down for a few minutes and then rode the 3 or so miles back to the HQ. I wasn't too bad walking until the next day when everything had tightened up.
I think I was much more coherent this year than the ESCA event when you spoke to me afterwards and I don't remember any of it. We had dinner at a pub Sunday night and the three of us were actually pretty chirpy compared to last year, nodding off into our steaks.

Hope the recovery is going well fella, congratulations and celebrations all round, that could not of been easy, respect for pushing on with the training it was worth it then?
Rode to work today. The first 500m was agony with eveything cramping up and nerves being pinched. Loosened up after a while so better off for it.
I didn't actually realise until Scherrit showed me, but last year's training had been piss poor compared to this year. I barely managed a long ride in the month leading up to the event whereas this year was much longer and more steady build. I still hated every weekend but yeah it was worth it.

Insane stuff Hippy. Most people wouldn't dream of riding that far in one go, let alone at that speed!
Well done on the training too, please say you'll be back next year to defend!

Congratulations Hippy, top drawer.
Did you get to speak to my old S London neighbour, Alex Kirk (he's a great chap)?

I don't think he was at the presentation and I didn't know anything about him during the race as Ultan gave me enough to worry about. If that's his first 24hr he bloody smashed it!

I think it was his first 24hr. He did have a stab at London-Bath-London a few years back though (John Woodburn's record) and put in a creditable performance, IIRC.

Just wanted to add my congratulations. Like others have said, I can't begin to imagine the sacrifice required to achieve something like this.
Well done to you (and the support team!)

Any chance of a write-up? I'm interested in the logistics and when you eat/sleep etc.

I usually write a race report but it takes some time and I've not even started thinking about it yet.
Briefly: Eat all the time, sleep none of the time. The end.

I overheard various folks talking about Hippy's ride at the North Road Club 10 tonight.
"He went how far...? but... 480 mile is 20 mph average..."

That quite a few tubs of Ben & Jerry's.
Did you weigh yourself before and after?
Fuck me. Chapeau.
500km is my 24 target (if I ever get off my fat arse to get prepared for one), can't imagine 1.609344 times that.
Two 24s next year (Mersey and Sussex), I'll talk about doing the Sussex one and might even actually do it this time. It's a nice flat course so I might even experiment with gears above 70".
