You need to have properly cleaned it, measured it, greased it and be sure that the post is the right size. If you fit a post slightly too big or too small you risk damage to the frame or the threads on the seat post bolt.
But a first word of caution would be that if you can barely get it into the frame you need to ask yourself if your going to get it out again...
