this is my plan for saturday morning:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2845912
train from waterloo to surbiton, 60 miles around the hilly loop of the ride.
anyone want to join me? I'll aim for the 9.12 train, 9.23 and 9.42 are also fast trains.
return tickets are £13 or £8.50 with a railcard or groupsave 4 people for £26.people with cycle computers / garmins for speed data / navigation particularly welcome!

I'm up for this in the morning if you're still going. I have a Garmin, but still manage to get lost on occasion and these aren't roads I know.
Let me know. Tom

hey. I just got in, so the 9.12 is a little optimistic. I'll try and make the 9.23.
Meet at Waterloo? It used to be easy to say "meet under the big clock" but I think they've removed it, so let's say soon as you can after 9am, in the middle of the concourse. I have a network railcard which you can use the discount on (up to 2 extra people travelling together).
I'll pm you my number, and a few others on this thread. -

TTM - any chance you could in put the route onto your garmin?
-
• #107
I'm not riding it properly, but this takes place along most of the route I have to ride to work, on a day that I'm working. There's not many other options as far as routes go.
Would it be bad form/etiquette to tag along with the ride for a stretch?

Damnit, I can't make this one. Have fun!

^^ the roads will be closed so I doubt you'd be able to get on the route...
^ thanks, will report back.

ok, so only managed 40 miles at 11mph average :/
we did this: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2864375
Box Hill actually is fine. I had to have a jelly baby pause at the bottom, but it was really ok. and the view at the top is A-mazing, and there is a NT cafe. since that's where TTM took off, I stopped for a pasty, a calippo and a slice of watermelon. I could've stayed there all day...what I have learned:
- I set off too quick. I don't have any real concept of how fast I'm going on the geared bike, I'm usually very steady-eddy on singlespeed. I'm going to commute on it to try and get used to it, and maybe borrow a speedometer.
- I am really unfit. I've barely been on the bike for 3 or more months. 3 weeks to improve.
- my expensive bike and expensive shoes are less comfortable than my regular kit. hmm. I am aching today.
- I really do not appreciate suffering for sport. but I'll do it just this once.
- If it's this hot in 3 weeks, I really doubt I'll finish.

Thank you for the company on Saturday. Wow that was hot!
Sorry if I pushed a bit hard at the beginning, but those roads out of Surbiton were grim and I was impatient to hit the lanes. Some of that countryside was very pretty and the tarmac was in good condition (thank you Olympics) so on closed roads I think it'll be a nice ride. As you mentioned, Box Hill is fine. It never got much above 6% I think and is nice and steady.
The good news is that I think I was a bit pessimistic regarding the average speed and actually the Garmin is saying 15/16mph average.

Thanks again for the company and apologies for dashing off. I made it to LMNH on the Southbank for a few pints in the sun and the last hour of the tour, so a good end to a good day.
Have fun in France.

Also wondering about this, would love to do the ride but didn't get a place. Can they really marshall a 100 mile stretch of road to check riders are all properly registered. How could they get you off if you're not, rugby tackle you?

Hi all,
I'm doing this carnage based 100 miler as well, looking at options to get back south west way. I know it's only from the Mall, but after 100 miles I'm not going to want to look at my bike, let alone ride it 6 odd miles back home, besides, my anus probably wouldn't let me.
Anyone got any info on transport options back west way? East London seems covered but west is getting ignored it seems!! I can't find a dicky bird on TFL.

have a rest and a sit down at the end, 6 miles won't seem so bad. or, if you can, get a friend to meet you at the end, give them your bike to ride home, get the bus.

my head tells me you're right hoefla, but I think my ass and my heart might tell me different on the day!!TFL and National Rail don't seem to be flagging any issues leaving at around 3 or 4 on the day so maybe it'll be fine!

Annoying that on the "how do you intend to travel to the event" survey they is no option for cycle!
FFS
It's all "where do you intend to park?" kinda shit.Anyway, because of my breaks I've had to back out.
I've been assured by the charity I'm riding for that my place (and the money I have raised) can be deferred to next year. -

"stay local and cycle" is the right option if you live in london and are cycling there...
shame you can't make it this time WJP -

Hi Chris,
I'm off at the same time and in need of some pretty serious training. What are you thinking?

• #122
I'm going out after work tonight (SE23) for a quick ~50 miles.
-
• #123
I'm doing a very awkward removal of personal stuff from ex girlfriend's place tonight.
Could get down tomorrow evening for 6pm though?
-
• #124
I'll be in the Kent lanes this evening. Not able to get out until 8ish though. Shout if that suits.

• #125
I'm planning on heading out around half six I'm afraid.
Does anyone fancy a ride on Saturday morning? Leave from Forest Hill overground and cycle out in to the downs? Few gentle hills and some flat training.
