Totally agree with the above... we should take our opinions to the NAH/LOBP to have any real impact.
There are loads of stick-in-the-muds in NA in my opinion (one winning approach might be: let's just try X and if it's lame after one season revert back... the resistance to change is pretty strong).
In my opinion the polo was more interesting to watch during the final games of last year's LO... it's a bit of a leap to suggest this was because of the crease/rules, but mid-court polo is definitely more fun to play/watch (I imagine the constant breakaways and mid-court challenges during the finals last year were probably down to mix-up teams rather than the rules to be honest).

Erin told me about Josh nicking Kev's mallet after a textbook Kev slash at Age vs. Beauty...
There isn't anything in the rules to say you can't do that at any time, right?
I will be doing this at the LO...

I'd call it under 8.2
A holding penalty will be assessed when a player impedes the movement of an opposing player by
holding (rather than blocking the path of) their mallet, body, or bike with his or her body. -

Oh for certain there are sticks in the mud over here. I'm just trying to get everyone with relevant and constructive opinions and comments in the same conversation. Dude, you don't have to tell me about the silly ass comments that pop up on the rule threads on LOBP. Sometimes I open up a rule thread and I simultaneously start grinding my teeth and pulling out my hair.

You're clearly doing something wrong...
Thanks, John...

James Brown taught me how to do that reacharound slash in numerous Downham throw ins, nobody pulled him up on it, j'accuse.

• #1734
...that reacharound slash...
If you're referring to it in these terms, do you really need someone to tell you it's against the rules? -
• #1735
Hooking not slashing.

• #1736
nice chris. james brown might be old school, but he's never read a rule set in his life. #loveyoujb

probably still taps the cone after a reset.

France are on top of their ref situation too. Good to see it happening.
-
• #1740
what's London doing?
-
• #1741
It's all online, there's no reason for Londoners not to take it is there?
In what way are France on top of it? (We need to be at least as on top of it as the French :)
-
• #1742
They pay for refs to travel to tournaments (and cool things like that).
However: name a french ref from any non-french tournament, there aren't many.
-
• #1743
Yeah, would make sense we just use the NAH quiz, if it's any good.
-
• #1744
A video guide would be cool: we were going to do that one in sumo suits, but it never materialised.
-
• #1745
To answer my own question, we'll probably just pick holes in the NAH one, scoff at the French and end up doing fuck all ourselves. And then moan again that reffing is not high level enough. The English way.

There's someone on the lobp thread saying he's not going to make the NA's but wanted to take the test, if he can then why don't we all just do it?
-
• #1747
I've taken the test. Got 82%, but couldn't see what answers I got wrong. Suspect they'll fix it in the future? It's a good start.

There's a specific question before you start the test asking if you want to ref for the NAs or not.
-
• #1749
Woot, I got 82% too!
When do we get our certificates?
Found one of my mistakes... Confusing the duties of the ref and timekeeper (easily done as 90% of my reffing has been done without a timekeeper)
Also looking at the ruleset, none of the answers for duties of the timekeeper are on there?!

I'll tell you the correct answers in private, if you like (don't want to ruin it for people).
I'd recommend people take it, it's good to know if you really understand the rules (some good questions in there)
I would love to ref a tournament with a crease, i reffed a lot of the Battle for the Mid-West games for reference (the bench). I've never seen it done but i'm an old ice hockey deference and while the rules are different about who and when can be in it I'd like the see it live and see how it effects the game. I think the double goalie is a stagnant and while not on a whole uncreative an active defense is way more fun to watch. I just want to see how effective it is about opening up the front of the net in polo.
Re: "I don't think a crease would solve the problem so much as just move it outside of the crease." I'm not trying to sound like an asshole but that is the whole point right? move bodies out of the front of the net for a cute drop to a shot or finesse ball. In my mind if you open the front of the net of the second goalie then more scoring opportunities will be created with the opening of shooting/pass-to-shot lanes.
Also if you all have opinions like this be sure to chime in on the rules discussion on LOBP right now. I'd love to see opinions and comments from across the pond in that conversation. There are currently a quite a few things being discussed. The root thread is here:

And Snoops, that Wild forward got a lesson from the Czech net minder, hahaha. (I'm a die hard red wings fan, born and raised in southeast Michigan)
