Yup, basically to keep the weight down, but IMHO singlespeed would be a better idea (and cheaper) as you're likely to never use both gear.

I use both gears on my 2 speed all the time. With the limited inertia from the small wheels it's nice to drop into the low gear to accelerate quickly. Especially if you're carrying a load. For the small extra cost and weight it's a no-brainer.
