The old ones were thin wire loops, bit more flimsy than new ones. Electronically speaking, it's just a bit of metal to connect the battery to the board, no wonder science needed.
To take the varnish off a bit of glass paper should do it, but be delicate, you only need the odd square mm around the place on the board to re-solder. Nail varnish should be good for replacement.
