  • Agree that is damn cheap. Cheaper than internal 3tb too.

  • noticed that. Was toying with the idea of getting an old Time Capsule and swap the drive out, but that'd unable me to get backup redundancy.

    Now the plan is:

Airport Extreme with 2 external hdd's hooked up, with all my music, photos and docs backup up to. Hopefully easy enough to be done weekly. Plugging in an external hdd seems to hard, as silly as it sounds, I just don't get round to do it.

TimeCapsule - older version, 1tb, for general backup, automagic

  • I kept replacing my Time Capsule because it keep failing.

In the end, I just use Super Duper + external hard drive instead.

  • How long does super duper take?

Scoble what Time Capsule did you have?

  • How long does super duper take?

depends how large your drive is?

You can achieve the same with Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner. Obviously CCC can update modified changes unlike Disk Utility.

  • Time for a new external hdd. I know I should get the G-drives, but wallet doesn't allow it. On the other end of the scale there's this:

    Seagate STBV3000200 3TB Expansion USB 3.0 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive - Black: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Cheapest 3TB I can find. The idea is to get one this month, and another next month, to have data redundancy between the two. Then a proper time machine for daily backups as well.

Or any other ideas that doesn't break the bank?

SEAGATE are rubbish. Just lost 2x1TB sea gates. for the 3rd time.

  • ^ uh oh. just ordered mine. fingers crossed.

  • ^ uh oh. just ordered mine. fingers crossed.

Just don't move em around a lot. The sad thing is if your ordered 3TB that's a huge amount of data to lose if it fails. Make sure you backup your important info from that Seagate regularly onto something else.

  • Ok I've got 2 iPod classics at home which I need to replace the battery on. The oldest (a 30gb model) is hardly holding a charge for 5 hours the 80gb newer one is holding a charge for about a day.

Also Mrs. Spenceey's iPod nano isn't even turning on, is there some kind of fault find I can do on it before I attempt to replace the battery on that too?

Last question, how do you identify the generation of the iPod classic? Because I guess the batteries aren't all compatible together.

Figured I may as well do them all at the same time.

Not worth the repair cost/hassle for older models.

What externals would folks recommend then? Looking for a USB3 2TB...

  • I've had zero problems with WD disks. I'll tell you about my seagate ventures in a year or two.

  • Awaits for Kboy 2 year reply until I'll buy back up.

  • I had a few failures of Seagate drives in the past as well. I've never had a WD drive fail on me.

Oh and stay away from Hitachi if you keep the drive running 24/7. Not a high failure rate but a high pitch noise that will drive you nuts. The models I had used to do that until I replaced them by WD drives (computer was in my bedroom, it's like there is a HUGE mosquito in your room).

  • Hm. Should've spent another 20 on a WD then it seems.

Got my airport extreme from ebay today btw, with some crap chinese power adaptor that the seller claims 'is just as good as apples'. Hardly the point is it...

  • If I jail break my iPhone 4 will it unlock it from o2? If no, is there a more reliable (but not horrendously expensive alternative to the rather untrustworthy looking high back street repair shops?

  • I just got a new macbook air.. Pretty pleased with it so far, but I want to use it is a bit of a media hub..

So, I was thinking about getting this wireless hard drive and sticking it by my router, and then getting Apple TV

Just wanted to check whether anyone had done anything similar and if not, whether anyone could foresee any problems? I'd be streaming content wirelessly from the hardrive to the Mac and then on to Apple TV.. Is that asking for trouble, or would that be alright?

  • I'm trying to do something similar, so I bought a LaCie 2TB d2 Network drive.
It plugs into the LAN, and i'm accessing it over wifi.

Not sure if it's a problem with the LaCie or the wifi, but browsing through it in Finder is painstakingly slow — playing video files from it just about works, but by the time I get to the movies folder, I've all but lost the will to live. Does anybody else have (good) experience of these setups?

Anyway, the LaCie is not working for me, so I'm thinking about using a mac mini (with an extra server-grade HD stuffed into it) to use as a local backup/media fileserver as well as a bit of a web server playground.

Just need to find out the best way to get an SQL, php, python and ruby dev environment up on it. Not sure if I need to go nginx or apache, or both.

    Decisions decisions.

    Get one of these

  • That's the plan so far. If I can get a slightly older model from ebay, I may do that.

I've just been digging through stackoverflow and server admin blogs all weekend to see if it's a viable setup.

  • Dunno if this place is the right one, but if anyone's clued up on ebay rules, please enlighten me.

Bought an Airport Extreme off ebay the other day, the ad content was just 'Original box missing', nothing more. As the seller had 100% rating, I thought why not. Won the auction, and received it in a bit of a state. Some spilled stuff on there and a cheap replacement power lead. The spills I could wipe off, but wrong lead isn't cool.

Been in touch with the seller, and after a fair amount of emails he agreed to a full refund. I sent it back recorded at the post office £7.99 to make sure he received it properly.

Got my refund for the item + postage, but not my return postage. Been reading up on ebay rules, but they seem quite vague. Should I pay return postage or not? I don't think I should as I didn't receive the actual item he claimed it was.

    Edit: here's the listing: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=231005202067

  • Nerg him regards postage. As a seller I've ended up paying postage in light of a courier not picking up on time to appease the buyer, and save my feedback rating. It's shit, but as a seller, if you want good rep you go the extra as far as I'm concerned

  • Possibly tell them first - and give them a chance to respond

  • Yeah i'm thinking that. A polite email saying I'd appreciate postage back, or else I'll nerg / escalate to resolution centre

  • sorry, I thought you had already spoken to him - yeah, do that first!
