  • Doesn't sound good http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/14871/Tour-de-France-Tony-Martin-down-but-not-out.aspx

Feel a bit sorry for him considering he dnf last year also due to crash

    From there:

“The CT scan excluded fractures,” said his team in a communication. “However, he has a concussion and a contusion on his left lung. He also has soft tissue damages on his hip, chest, left knee and shoulder, and also on his back. Furthermore, he has a very deep wound 5cm wide on his left elbow that reaches his muscles, which causes a lot of pain and a problem moving his arm.”

It would be a shame if he had to abandon.

  • WTF was Johnny H up to?

Yet more rubbish Tour luck for Tony Martin.

  • How the F will tony Martin be able to carry on? Surely that's too much! Although having just read charley wegeilus' book it maybe it's just what has to be done. Also gutted as have him in my fantasy team.

  • It would take suspiciously superhuman attributes to carry on for long if the injuries are as bad as suggested. Even then he won't be able to perform at anything near his best.
He's as good as out. Bit of a shame really.

  • Given the likelihood of more crashes today then if he has had a concussion it would be criminal to let him start. It's not as if he's even going to be able to stay neat the front.

  • they may try to nurse him through the next couple of stages and see if he recovers. Lefevre isn't happy

  • A second concussion can be fatal. From what I have read it's more likely in teenagers but the risk is still there. It would be negligent to let him race at all.

  • Cav just re-tweeted that Tony Martin is going to start....
Alessandro Tegner ‏@AleTegner 22m Good news. @tonymartin85 will take the start this morning. #OPQS #opqstdf #nevergiveup

  • Great, teams complain about rider safety then put someone who has had a head injury back in to a race where crashes are almost certain and the route contains some difficult descents.

  • I just hope this goes well ...

Seeing as the decision to start has undoubtedly been cleared with someone with more medical knowledge than we have, the concussion can't be so bad as to pose that risk. Fingers crossed. I'm sure that if the stage doesn't go well, he'll be taken out of the race before the finish.

  • And, by the way, all French and English commentators, Kittel's surname rhymes with 'little' and not with 'Vittel'.

  • It also rhymes with 'brittle', 'skittle', 'spittle', 'acquittal', '(non-)committal', or 'whittle'.

    This

Even if the team want him to race the tour referee shouldn't allow it

  • We should remember 2011 when Chris Horner was allowed by his DS to finish a stage.
This is what he was like at the end of it

  • Steephill.tv has stopped providing links to Europsort.

Cyclingfans are still doing them though.

Oh, Oliver. Like the French give a toss how you lot pronounce your silly little language.

  • Tony Martin is a right trooper. Took a right battering yesterday. Apologies if these pics are included in the links above, haven't checked them all

  • Peter Kennaugh's surname seems to be confusing some of the British commentators too....

  • Peter Kennaugh's surname seems to be confusing some of the British commentators too....

To be fair, I think he should hold a press conference and clear up how to say it.

I mean I look at the letters in the word 'Kennaugh' but my mind just fails to arrange them into a readable format.

  • I'd concede alongside a lot of Gaelic names it's the not perhaps the most intuitive of pronunciation, but it's 'ken yak', not 'ken aw', 'ken oh', 'ken of', etc. I seem to remember fellow Manxman Cav gently pointing this out at the Olympics but commentators struggling again within seconds.

  • so where are the streams at today?

Rugby guidelines for light concussion(internationaly defined):
no physical or otherwise efforts during the first 48h,
another example of cycling having health far away from their agenda.
