  • I know nothing about phone VPNs. Is there an app I could use existing Cisco VPN profiles with? What about Windows VPN connections - can I just enter the URLs and it'll work?

With iVPN and the OpenVPN client, basically you install the client on the phone.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn&hl=en

And then you download a profile from iVPN and import it into the OpenVPN client.

It uses UDP for communication, and you will achieve around 70-80% of whatever your connection speed.

When enabled, it's totally invisible to you. You won't have to use any special browser or browser plugin, all internet traffic will go over the VPN. Whether it's GMail using IMAP, Dolphin using https, or even an SSH session.

Everything gets encrypted invisibly, and you can pick whatever endpoint you want to us, to make it appear that you have a US, EU or UK connection, etc.

And if you want to get paranoid you can double-hop... sending the traffic to the US before routing back to the UK.

The whole thing is invisible to you after setup, and you only need connect every once in a while (if you've gone without reception for a while... then you may have to reconnect manually).
