Not a wuss at all mate, if you can spin those and travel at a decent pace then it's all good.

44/18=66", a perfectly sensible gear for just riding around, and everybody's winter gear back in the day.

I'm doing several rides a week to and from deep SE London at the moment, via Gipsy Hill, Sydenham Hill or Kirkdale (I've tried **and hate **them all). Doesn't help that as I'm slowly heaving up these gradual inclines I pass various 'Mounts', 'Overhills', 'Underhills', 'Upper' this and 'Rise' that.
Need to find a better gear ratio for the Creamroller - currently running 47x17 which is fine for flat (I don't like too much spin) but I know I should be trying out others to make hills easier.
Don't want to spend too much cash experimenting...what did you suggest again Indra?

FWIW I did those hills on 48/19 (a little smaller than 47/18) with ease so I'm sure you'll be ok with the 18t on, it's still best to learn to spin.

OK, thanks Dad :)

Was riding 42/16 on a frame I built up as a beater but just bought a Fuji with 48/15.
It's proving 'fun'.

I live in Bristol and 44/17 is perfect for here with all the hills, could go a bit lower but then would lose out on some speed

You need higher gears to go fast/er :) of course you start low sometime....
And i hate spinin like a hamster, everything below 44/17 is just a pain in the ass goin downhill.....even in a city...thats only for hiphop Trick bikes. Like the big straps or "pursuit Geo" and raiserbars :D

says you ;)
Having read through much of this I'm beginning to think I must be a bit of a wuss, old codger, or both as I'm on 44x18 but may be changing to 44x17. I live out of London and have to cope with an uphill commute every morning.
