Shop assistant wanted in East Dulwich

Hi folks, Balfe's Bikes is looking for a shop assistant to work in our East Dulwich shop.

We're looking for someone who knows their bikes and is really great with customers. Bike mechanic skills aren't necessary, the best applicant would just live on their bike, be organised and really like dealing with customers.

The job on offer cannot be guaranteed into winter but we hope we could continue it. The shop itself is offering bike-fitting now which is using up much of Kierans time so we need a new staff member to free up his time to offer more of these bike fits.

We're a friendly regular bike shop and much of our customer base is female. We'd like to represent women amongst the staff a little bit more. Currently we have eleven male staff out of a total of eleven.

The job on offer is five days per week, including Saturdays. Although hours within those days are negotiable so we are able to take into consideration childcare or other responsibilities. The pay is basic min wage, whatever that is!

Most bike shops now pay a few quid more than minimum wage. You want experienced staff with technical knowledge? Pay them for it.

If they're recruiting, they might want to spend five minutes working out what they're going to pay, rather than sounding so dismissive. They have three branches, two quite convenient to me, neither of which I'll be using now.

If you're a recruiter looking to employ someone then having a grasp on the basics, like hours, wages etc., is essential. The way Richard Balfe phrased above it sounds like he couldn't give a shit about that, hence the comments.

To provide a service for the local community, to provide an opportunity for employees to gain a sense of civic worth and personal development whilst being given the means to continue living within that community, blah blah blah? None of which are exclusive from making a modest profit. The owner pays themself a wage. The profit is there for reinvestment in the company. Isn't it? Maybe I'm confused.

I doubt it. But everyone else on the forum is bright enough to realise that rewarding staff appropriately and communism aren't one and the same.

And what's he offering for all this? "The pay is basic min wage, whatever that is!" Not even the living wage, but the absolute least he can get away without breaking the law.

There may be times when that's all an employer can afford (but I doubt it), but if it is, show some fucking respect and work out what it is you're asking people to accept and don't be so flippant about it.

And is it really "good of him" to let us know about this supperb minimum wage opportunity? Or do you think advertising it for free on here played a part with this high-roller? I'm all for publicising jobs to members on the forum, but I'll leave it to you to give him the hand job you think he deserves.

I don't agree with minimum wage for anyone but it may well be suitable for a very menial job like, I would imagine, filling shelves in Tesco. To offer someone minimum wage (and be so unprofessionally throw away about it) to do a sales position which involves a lot of technical knowledge and interaction with the public seems like very bad business. I can imagine that any bike shop doing well enough to have 3 stores on or around cycle superhighways/major cycle commuter routes could afford to at least pay properly for good staff.

When I worked there Richard fired me with 0 notice because he felt he wasn't making enough money at the time which because I'd been living on minimum wage meant I had no savings and eventually resulted in me being homeless. He had just opened and ended up with too much of the wrong stock. Looks like he's doing alright now though.
