    A single gear is not long enough. Either you top out prematurely or can't get the fucker going. (Maybe fine for the urban warrior with gears in his legs)

    Until some bright spark makes a variable fixed transmission of course.

    Even then, a free hub and brakes will still allow more variarion. (Downhilling at 70 mph for example)

    I presume the salt flat racer is the fixed gear bike... if not this seems strange.

    For some people it's the other way around. I felt limited by free wheel bikes up until I got on a fixed gear. To me fixed feels correct. I understand that it does not fit well with most... that is why I'm a member of this forum.

    There should be no debate about this here.

    Most people only use 3 gears on their geared bikes anyway, the others are just to get to those 2 extremes and the middle gear.
