I even remember at the time, just before V-brake appeared, some MTB geeks, were measuring the distance between the top end of each arm, and had calculated the optimum setting. I never went into the math, but a friend told me I had to set mines at 135mm appart, so that's what I was doing... Never had a problem going down the Puys de Dome when I was a student in Clermont Ferrand...
